The Moscow Mule and its Copper Cocktail Cup

According to Esquire Magazine, the perfect Moscow Mule is a mix of ½ oz lime juice, 2oz Vodka and 6oz ('ish) Ginger Beer (1fl oz in US measures = 30ml (approx.) – we’ll let you do the math!). The method couldn’t be simpler – squeeze the lime juice into your copper cup (it must be copper), throw in the lime’s spent shell, then add ice cubes, vodka, and fill with ginger beer. Stirring is the last important step before drinking – shaking would, in any case, get messy in a cup with no lid.
The copper is a traditional material that will keep the drink chilled and your hand cool and the drink is an American invention from a rare moment of Russian/American accord (1941 to be precise). It is the result of a chance encounter between a Russian vodka importer, the owner of ‘the coolest venue in Hollywood’ (that also happened to be stockpiled with ginger beer), and a young Russian woman with 2,000 copper mugs to sell. ‘Moscow’ is an obvious reference, ‘Mule’ is there for the kick that comes with the sweet, sharp and spicy combination of the cocktail as a whole.
